A Brief History of Berrien County
Georgia's General Assembly created Berrien County in 1856, its 116th county, out of portions of Coffee, Irwin, and Lowndes counties.
The county took its name from John Macpherson Berrien, a Savannah attorney and judge who served as United States Attorney General under President Andrew Jackson. The county seat, Nashville, incorporated in 1892, was named for Revolutionary War officer General Francis Nash of North Carolina.
Railroad expansion proved decisive to Nashville's growth, and the 1908 arrival of the Georgia & Florida Railroad connected local farmers to wider markets, turning a small agricultural crossroads into a more substantial commercial center.
