A Brief History of Baldwin County
Baldwin County was laid out from lands distributed in Georgia's 1803 land lottery and was named for Abraham Baldwin, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, U.S. senator, and founder of the University of Georgia.
State lawmakers chose the new county as the site of a planned capital city, Milledgeville, founded in 1803 along the Oconee River. Milledgeville served as Georgia's state capital from 1804 until 1868, giving the county an unusually prominent role in the state's early political life.
As the seat of state government, antebellum Milledgeville drew lawyers, printers, and merchants alongside the cotton trade, and its collection of Federal and Greek Revival buildings from that era still stands today.
