A Brief History of Baker County

Baker County was formed on December 12, 1825, from the eastern portion of Early County, one of many subdivisions carved out of Georgia's southwestern frontier in the early nineteenth century.

It was named in honor of Colonel John Baker, a Georgia officer who served in the American Revolutionary War. An early county seat was first sited at Byron, but complaints about its location led to relocation to Newton in 1831, where the courthouse has remained since.

Large cotton plantations worked by enslaved laborers formed the economic base of antebellum Baker County. The collapse of cotton prices and severe drought during the Great Depression hit the county hard, pushing many residents toward other crops and off the land.

Baker County's Economy Today

Baker County today remains one of Georgia's most sparsely populated and agriculturally oriented counties, with farmland given over to peanuts, cotton, corn, and soybeans alongside cattle and hog operations.
