A Brief History of Bacon County
Bacon County was created in 1914 out of portions of Appling, Pierce, and Ware counties, becoming one of the youngest of Georgia's counties, reflecting a period when many south Georgia communities pushed the legislature to carve out smaller counties.
The new county was named for Augustus Octavius Bacon, a Georgia lawyer and four-term United States senator who had risen to become president pro tempore of the Senate shortly before his death in 1914. The county seat, Alma, grew up along the rail line.
Naval stores and turpentine production were the backbone of the local economy in Bacon County's early years, with area pine forests supplying the gum and rosin that fed local stills.
Bacon County's Economy Today
Agriculture remains central to Bacon County, and the area has become particularly known for blueberry production; Alma promotes itself as a hub of Georgia's blueberry industry and holds an annual festival celebrating the crop.
Beyond blueberries, farmers in the county grow a range of row crops and raise livestock, while forestry continues to make use of the pine timber that once fueled the turpentine trade.
Manufacturing and distribution have also become meaningful parts of the local economy, with metalworking and textile operations, along with transportation and warehousing businesses, taking advantage of Alma's rail and highway connections.
