A Brief History of Atkinson County

Atkinson County was formed on August 15, 1917, from portions of Clinch and Coffee counties, making it one of the last of Georgia's 159 counties to be organized.

It was named for William Y. Atkinson, who served as Georgia's governor from 1894 to 1898 and was known for championing public education. The county seat, Pearson, had been established decades earlier, in 1895, and was named for local landowner Benajah Pearson.

The area's economy in its early decades depended heavily on the vast pine forests covering the region, with logging crews floating timber down the Satilla River. As the timberland was cleared, farm families turned increasingly to cotton, tobacco, and corn.
