A Brief History of Appling County
Appling County was carved out by the Georgia legislature on December 15, 1818, becoming the 42nd county established in the state. Much of its original territory had only recently passed out of Creek hands, ceded through the 1814 Treaty of Fort Jackson and a further 1818 agreement at the Creek Agency.
The county takes its name from Colonel Daniel Appling, a Georgia-born officer who died in 1818 after distinguishing himself in the War of 1812, including a notable defense along Lake Ontario. Appling never lived in the county named for him.
For much of the nineteenth century, families in the area lived by subsistence farming, raising livestock, and cutting timber and gum from the region's pine forests. As cotton cultivation expanded after the Civil War, Baxley grew into the county's commercial center, and local turpentine stills became productive enough that the area became known as a world capital of turpentine production.
Appling County's Economy Today
Agriculture still anchors Appling County's economy, though row crops have diversified well beyond the cotton and tobacco that once dominated, with growers now raising cotton and tobacco alongside a substantial blueberry industry, dairy operations, and other specialty crops.
Forestry remains a major land use and employer, with extensive stands of slash and loblolly pine feeding area sawmills, pulp operations, and timber-hauling businesses.
Baxley, the county seat, functions as the commercial hub, hosting agricultural supply businesses, small manufacturers, and healthcare and government services, while land along the Altamaha River adds modest recreation and hunting-related tourism.
