Alachua County was created in 1824, one of Florida's earliest counties, established not long after the United States acquired Florida from Spain and began organizing its territorial government. Its name is generally traced to a Timucua or Seminole word describing a large sinkhole or natural water basin, a feature once used by early inhabitants of the area.
